Slovak Television (STV)

Slovak Television (STV) is a public television service that broadcasts on three channels, Channel One (Jednotka), Channel Two (Dvojka) and Channel Three (Trojka) across the entire territory of the Slovak Republic. Its whole-day market ratings share was approximately 22, 4 % (all three channels) and its prime time ratings reached 22, 9%.
STV is the Slovak oldest TV channel. Its first program aired on November 3, 1956 from the television studio in Bratislava. It began providing color broadcasting on February 14, 1970 from the World Ski Championships in the High Tatras. Contemporary STV came into existence with the separation of Czechoslovakia on July 1, 1991 and was the first public- television service in the transforming countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

Viewers have selected STV as the most reliable Slovak television network. For decades it has played a key role not only on the television market but also in the creation of public opinion. It has won hundreds of awards at domestic and international film and television festivals.

Jednotka (Channel One) is profiled as a universal family channel. Its programming enables it to compete with the commercial television networks. All genres are represented: news, investigative journalism, entertainment of its own provenience and acquisition titles.  The most successful program entitled “Mail for You “(Pošta pre teba) achieved an average ratings share of 33, 9 %. Other successful programs in 2008 were “The Hit of the Century” (Hit storočia) and “The Way We Were” (Takí sme boli).  After ten years the Slovak Television participates in the Eurovision Song Contest (Veľká cena Eurovízie).

Televison broadcasting on Dvojka (Channel Two) is geared to more sophisticated viewers while also providing space for minority genres. The general public thinks of Channel Two as the sports – documentary channel.
The most watched programs of the Channel Two are transmissions from the Olympics Games, the World Ice Hockey Championships (Canada, 2008) and prestigious club sporting events. However, the key genres of this channel are documentary films, various forms of journalism, sophisticated European films and television series and regional news programs. In 2008, the most successful program was “Guardian Angels” (Anjeli strážni).

Trojka (Channel Three) 8.8.2008 it is not only the special date for STV3 which started its broadcasting, but also it is important day for all mankind because in this day in Beijing, China, started the summer Olympic Games. This channel is focused on sporting events. The satellite broadcasting started the era of receiving the television signal in the high definition (HDTV) and at the same time it became the next step in the phase of terrestrial digital broadcasting. The compact program offer brings audience more live TV coverage of the most significant international and domestic sporting events. STV3 brings also the sports which so far did not have the space in the coverage. These are, i.e. junior sporting events and discussion programs.

What is the future of the public service television in Slovakia? Presently, the Slovak Television is in the phase of switching from analogue to terrestrial digital broadcasting, this process should have been completed by 2012 when the new era of the mission of the public service television will begin.
The new technology for the transmission of the broadcasting signal will also bring a challenge for new services, production and a technologically varied distribution of the original television and film production. In order to fulfill these goals, the Slovak Television must undergo a number of structural changes in the areas of programming, equipment, technology and their financing.
